There’s a local indy that’s closing down the road from me. He’s selling his tools and equipment. I’m going to stop by in hopes of a shop jack, torque wrenches, and jack stands. Are there other specialty tools I should be considering that might be stupid-cheap?

If you have a compressor - all the pneumatic tools you can get.
If not even stuff like standard wrenches he’ll probably have better quality than you would be picking up to wrench in the driveway.

I do, but it's a little home jobber for trim nailers and other wood carcass tools. But, if I can get decent tools, I don't mind squirreling them away until I can get my hands on a decent compressor.

There's a good idea. That and an oxy-acetylene cutting setup would be welcome additions to my shop.

Keep an eye out for any odd shaped sockets. Even if you don’t need them, someone will be lookin for them one day.

Yeah, it's those oddities that usually catch my eye. That and machinist tools- calipers, depth gauges, feelers, etc.

In that case go for the impact guns and the air ratchet. Absolutely the air ratchet, think of a skinny impact gun that fits more places....and cracks more knuckles....but it’s a great tool if you wear gloves hahahaha

It’s just top of mind because I’ve needed a MIG for about a month now. I’ve been looking (on CL - let’s be honest, I’m not buying something like that new), but haven’t found one I like.
If you score one maybe I’ll drop by!

If you’ve already got the basics I’d be picking up all the weird shit that always turns out to be the stuff that I have to go out and buy in the middle of a project...giant Allen sockets, star bits, flexible extensions, snap ring pliers, O2 sensor sockets, torx set with large sizes, hog ring pliers, interior clip tools...that kind of thing.

Good advice otherwise.

I doubt I’ll have the cash for a mig welder unless it’s ridiculously inexpensive. If you’re in the southern Maine area, you’re more than welcome to it.

I guess it really depends on what you already have in your current tool collection. Just go there as early as you can and start browsing.

Good tool boxes or caddies are often missing from the home work space.
I find such events to be excellent times to look for seldom used tools that can be useful in multiple applications. e.g. gear pullers and slide hammers. You can use them on lots of different stuff, they’re not model/brand specific, but you don’t need them very often.

Good advice. I was gifted several old steel toolboxes and wooden totes from a friend, which I absolutely love. A slide hammer would be a welcome addition, as would those weird little one-off tools that can stop a project dead when they're not available.
